Thursday, June 23 2005 3:50 P.M. Animal Overpopulation:
Every one of us knows about animal shelters. We've got em in our very own towns. Isn't there something wrong with that?
We've almost got a shelter in every town. How are there that many animals that no one wants? What's wrong with these animals?
Are their pedigrees not good enough?, are they not cute enough?, are they too big?, too small?, not scary enough?, too scary?.
Why are we so picky about finding an animal companion? Are animals even considered companions any more? Have they simply become
another type of possession in our material world? And don't get me started on breeders, People who facilitate and
support animal overpopulation. Why does a dog or cat have to be a certain "breed"? Why do they have to be "pure"? Consider
those words in quotations. Wasn't Hitler trying to make the world "pure"? Isn't racism based on someones heritage, otherwise
known as "breed"? Since when did the animal world get involved in a holocaust. It sounds crazy, but that's what it is! People
only want certain types of animals. The animals that no one wants end up dead in the street or in line to be killed at the
shelter. People who breed animals may not realize it, but they are adding to an already overwhelming population. And even
if you want an adorable puppy, or a tough guard dog, you can find him/her at a shelter. So many animals are in need of love
and care, and they all have unique personalities. It's because of the large number of unwanted animals and the lack of resources
that stuff like this happens. And the fact that we're letting this happen in our very own state only makes it worse. Please
help to stop animal overpopulation and don't buy animals from pet stores or breeders. Adopt them from shelters. Shelters are
everywhere, and desperately in need of our support. Donate money and pet supplies to local shelters, and volunteer your service.
These animals need love, and even if you can't adopt them, you can still pet them, feed them, walk them, and play with them.
Please spay or neuter the pets you have, and inspire family and friends to do the same.
